How Do I Use Sound As A Ruler?

In this activity, we make a sound at one speaker, and we listen for that sound in the opposite microphone. The amount of time it takes for the sound to reach the microphone tells us how far apart the ear pucks are. If you’re having trouble getting it to work, here are some tips:

  • Hold one ear puck in each hand, with the speakers facing each other.
  • Try not to block the mic holes with your hands.
  • Don’t move the ear pucks too quickly! The ruler only updates a few times each second, so keep that in mind as you’re moving the pucks closer and further apart.
  • When it’s working, you should hear a repeated sound coming from the ear pucks, and you should see the yellow ruler displayed in the app.
